"Raymond loved life and made everything he did fun for anyone involved in what he was doing. I was lucky enough to share many things with Raymond and polo was our favorite thing to do. I have no doubt that if he wanted to, he could have become a 10 goal player."
     - Owen Rinehart

After a tragic car accident that took Raymond Vere Nicoll's life in 1975, Raymond's parents, Dr. Douglas and Molly Vere Nicoll and friends established a fund in Raymond's honor. In time, this fund has grown substantially and is now known as the Raymond Bruce Vere Nicoll Polo Scholarship Fund (RBVNS). The purpose of this fund is to honor the memory of Raymond by providing financial assistance to those applicants and students enrolled at the University of Virginia who need financial assistance and who share and have demonstrated Raymond's love for the game of polo. Recipients of financial assistance from the RBVNS are designated "Vere Nicoll Polo Scholars."

It befits Raymond's love of polo that his family and friends chose to support young people's needs and desire to play polo while at the University of Virginia. Since the fund's inception, it has been one of Virginia Polo's greatest assets by attracting great people and great players.
